A tragic collision on Highway 401 near Port Hope has claimed the life of a driver who was struck while standing outside his parked vehicle, according to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).
The fatal incident occurred after the driver pulled onto the shoulder of the busy highway and exited his vehicle. Investigators say that, for reasons still being determined, a passing vehicle subsequently struck both the parked car and the individual standing nearby.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene and immediately began providing life-saving medical assistance. Due to the severity of his injuries, the victim was airlifted to a Toronto-area trauma centre for urgent treatment.
Despite the efforts of first responders, medical personnel, and trauma specialists, the driver later succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities confirmed that the driver of the second vehicle remained at the scene following the collision and has been fully cooperating with investigators. No other injuries were reported.
