Michael Derrick Obituary, Snellville GA Accident Death – Community Mourns Beloved Resident After Fatal Pedestrian Crash

The sudden death of 24-year-old Michael Derrick of Snellville, Georgia, has left both his hometown and the Columbia, South Carolina community in mourning following a fatal pedestrian crash on the Gervais Street Bridge.

According to authorities, the incident occurred on May 31 when Derrick was walking on a sidewalk along the eastbound side of the bridge connecting downtown Columbia and West Columbia. Police say an SUV driven by 30-year-old William Joseph Livingston veered onto the sidewalk and struck him, causing him to be dragged before being thrown over the bridge’s guardrail and falling to the riverbank below.

Emergency responders arrived quickly and found Derrick alive but suffering from critical injuries. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. His passing was confirmed by the Richland County Coroner.

The driver was initially charged with felony DUI resulting in bodily injury, and following Derrick’s death, the charge was upgraded to felony DUI resulting in death. Officials confirmed the suspect remains in custody as the investigation continues.

Friends and family remember Derrick as a kind, sincere, and warm young man who valued relationships and left a lasting impression on those who knew him. His death has prompted an outpouring of grief across both communities, where loved ones continue to share memories and support one another.
